The Pros & Cons of Saving Your Credit Card Info Online

Some shopping sites online when you create an account with them offer to store your credit card information or when you purchase things from them online for the first time.
Take note that no matter it seems the offer is tempting for reasons of convenience, it doesn't mean there is no risk involved.
Try to weigh the pros and cons and ask the following questions before allowing any online company or retail shops to store your credit card details with your account information.

Pro: When you return for another transaction, you don't need to enter your credit card details across the web again, exposing it to potential theft.
Con: Credit card details are stored on the company's servers where it can also be vulnerable, along with thousands or millions of other accounts to theft if the company's security measures become compromised.

Pro: Most sites enforce strong account passwords and require credit card verification codes such as the 3 or 4 digit number printed at the back of your credit card provide a double layer of protection.
Con: If someone gains access to your account, they may be able to purchase posing as you, at least on that same site.

Consider the following questions:
  • Does the site require both a strong account password and card verification codes? If not, skip the offer.
  • Do you plan to return to the site and make purchases regularly? If not, the storage risks outweigh the transmission risks. Pass.
  • Do you feel comfortable that the company has sufficient resources and commitment to maintain the highest level of data security? If in doubt, pass.
